Do the media promote a negative self-concept in women? Yes. Perfectly healthy women form negative self-concepts because of media portrayals of thin, artificial women.
Much of the negative self-concept surrounds our less than "perfect" bodies. A negative self-concept is projected onto any woman who doesn't have the "ideal" weight. What's "ideal" anyway?
There's certainly no positive physical self-concept in the anti-ageing propaganda. The anti-ageing advertisements only promote a youthful physical self-concept.
If our hair turns grey why develop a negative self-concept about it? If we have wrinkles why develop a negative self-concept? Is there any need to have a negative self-concept about our "middle-aged spread"? After all, it helps in oestrogen storage. The anti-ageing campaigns fight our natural physical self-concept.
Such negative self-concepts are dangerous. Let's reclaim a healthy physical self-concept. A true physical self-concept includes women of all shapes and sizes. Let's celebrate a physical self-concept that embraces the truth.
