Taflyn Fiola | Self-confidence | How to have fun

Civil celebrant, volunteer for the Pyjama Foundation, owner of a building company – what else does this 41 year old do?

I am 41 and live in Broadbeach Waters, Gold Coast, Queensland. I am married and have no children (by choice).

I was born and bred in Sydney and moved to the beautiful Gold Coast 18 years ago where I met my husband through work about 9 years ago.

Education-wise I finished year 12 in Sydney in 1985, then completed a BA in Leisure Studies, (yes, it is a real course), in 1988. Since then I have undertaken a variety of short courses for either work or pleasure.

I did the overseas trip to Europe by myself when I was 21 for about 18 months. I think it's the best thing anyone can ever do as a young person. This was my first time living out of home, so the whole experience of being way outside my normal comfort zone was totally scary and exciting. Seeing new countries, meeting different people from all over the world ... it is a must!

Jobs have been many and varied over the last 20 years, mainly in marketing and administration, with some sales thrown in.

Currently I work with a speakers and entertainers bureau, am a marriage and civil celebrant, and my husband and I have a building company which we started in February 2009. Obviously I like variety, I’m a Sagittarian!

Whether it be a wedding, a baby naming, vow renewal, commitment ceremony ... or a myriad of other occasions people like to commemorate ... these are all the events at which I may be of assistance.

I am also fairly heavily involved in Toastmasters, and I am secretary of our local Neighbourhood Watch club. I also participate in volunteering for such organisations as The Pyjama Foundation, Animal Welfare League and the Kokoda challenge.

I have overcome a loss of confidence by reading, listening and associating myself with fun, positive, passionate, productive and playful people!

What has helped me build my confidence is continually stepping up and out of my comfort zone by taking on new roles and challenges that force me out of my shell.

It’s good to be confident because I have more fun, meet more people, and grow as a person.

I stay confident by getting out and about as much as I can, enjoying life and good friends, and being a fun, positive, passionate, productive and playful person!

Taflyn's wedding celebrant site is called "Joyful Celebration".

The Pyjama Foundation provides help for vulnerable children.
